When Becky was here a while back, she gave us the news that she is going to be getting married. We are very excited and happy for her. We have not met her young man yet, but will when we go to Georgia this winter. She is very nervous about her Dad meeting The Guy. Dad is just not good at meeting The Guy. Lord knows, he tries, but somehow it usually doesn't go well on that first meeting.
Becky and The Guy have set their wedding date for February 20, 2011 and they have reserved a very nice venue for the wedding. She is sending me links for florists and musicians.
I have started looking at mother of the bride dresses online. I know it is kind of early for that, but I remember when my youngest daughter, Emily, got married, we looked for weeks and weeks for a dress. It's not that I am that picky, it's just that I don't think the people who make mother of the bride dresses are very realistic about what a 57 year old woman looks like in a dress.
(Here I am as mother of the groom in 1995. The red dress worked fine back then. It was a less formal wedding at a church in Smyna, Ga.)

This dress is actually listed as a mother of the bride dress. I don't know anyone who has a daughter old enough to get married who looks like that, or who could actually wear that dress. I can't even imagine it in a size 24.
This one is a little better, at least I can picture it in a plus size, but does it really have to be that shiney? Do they really think a large woman wants to draw that much attention to herself? I don't know how formal the wedding is going to be, but if the occasion calls for it, this dress may be ok. Just wish it didn't glow.

And yes, this one was in the category of mother of the bride, too. It shows a bit more of the gozongas than I would like. Who are these people who would wear something like that to their daughter's wedding?
I think this one would make me frumpy. What do you think? Or am I really too picky?
I DID find a couple of dresses I like. This one, if it is a more formal event, I think would look real nice on a "big boned" lady like me. I like the mint green, but I wear a lot of pink, too.
And for less formal, I might just pick this. It would depend on how it looks in person when I tried it on. At least the people who own that website are using a plus size model so you can get a somewhat realistic idea of how that dress would look on a larger woman.
And though I don't think this one would be right for a wedding, I do like the looks of it--except that I know something that clingy wouldn't look good on me. And there is that cleavage thing again, too.

Hope The Man and The Guy see eye to eye. Something about men and their daughters boyfriends... they are never good enough. Luckily our youngest has at last found a satisfactory one in The Man's eyes. There were many rejects before this one.
My pick would be the shiny one. Don't like the clingy ones, there's too much on this bod to cling to! LOL
I can't believe the models in most of them. They are not mother's of the bride they are the bride. When my son got married I thought the outfit was going to be fine but the pictures are awful. The dress hem looked crooked, the sleeves were too long. I am a plus size as well. Be sure that you take pictures in the dress before you buy it.
Diane: I am glad I am not the only one who has to deal with this "man vs boyfriend" type of thing. He thinks he's not that bad, but just ask the girls! They will tell you a much different story.

Ms. Fiddlesticks: thank you for such a good suggestion. You are right, the camera is unforgiving. And yes, those models aren't fooling anyone. The people who advertise and sell to us bigger gals need to get a clue and start showing us older, bigger women wearing those dresses they want us to wear.
I found two off the rack dresses at JC Penney for our daughter's wedding. One is like the blue and black one...simple but NOT showing any gazongas! (not that I have any to show!) $69.99 each. One is black and white, the other one is a turqoise and brown. I don't wear dresses much anyway. I wouldn't be able to order online anyway...stupid, wide HIPS!
Choices, choices. What does Becky want. That comes first. When my daughter married in 2005 we found a lovely evening outfit with slacks. I am more comfortable in pants than dresses, and it was perfectly alright with my daughter. I'll try to find a photo of it and post it on my FB page for you.
First off, your family wedding photos are lovely.
To the designer and maker of the first dress… you’re kidding, right? I'm a big girl with DD gazongas and can’t imagine my upper arm flab hanging out between the top of the formal gloves and the top of the strapless dress. Perhaps this is more appropriate for the *younger* sister of the bride?
The second dress is nice. Personally, I don’t like separates on me because my torso is on the short side, but it is pretty.
The third dress definitely showcases the girls. And as the owners of DD gazongas, I'd probably be walking around looking down all the time to make sure nothing is showing.
Undecided on the fourth “frumpy” dress. It looks like a plus size dress on a skinny model, so it could be the photograph.
The fifth dress looks like a keeper. I think the pink would be nice. If you choose the green, please don't let the newspaper describe the mother of the bride as wearing a "mint" green dress. Too 70s!! You're much too hip for that.
The next dress is a keeper, too, for a less formal event. And you could definitely wear it again for another special occasion. Perhaps dinner and dancing with Fab Grandpa?
The last dress is nice, too, and even the suggested dresses on the website are good. A wrap dress or blouse is always good on a full-figured gal, speaking from personal experience. I can't live without my Nip Tuck Boost.

I think you gave all of us a good laugh today. You are so right. The models are a size 6 and we are 16 plus. I know. The second one was almost exactly what I picked out for my daughter's wedding. Mine was in a steel grey and the jacket had no collar just squared off. It was like mini chain mail. I haven't yet but I plan on having it cut down to a cocktail length so I could use it if I would ever need too. I did like the one you said would maybe work in the mint green. Can't pick any of the others but that is just me.
I know where Smyrna is, my hubby is from Roswell if you remember me telling you. Sister in Kennesaw and brother in Duluth.
Ok so my thought for now. I know you are sad to leave such a beautiful place but Georgia is a little piece of heaven. And I know you will be glad to getting back closer to family. Give me a hollar when you get there and maybe on our visit up there at xmas I can get to meet you and hubby.

Love the 3rd one.The lines are right for us plus sizes. Also like that it isan't clingy. I can't even seem to find T-shirts that don't cling anymore. Go with #3 its not to formal.
So far, I like the Galina best. Keep shopping.
I liked the shiny one, but a lighter color would be nice. I also liked the one you said for a more formal occasion. I think it would work for a semi formal as well. I say keep shopping too. Any ideas what colors Becky is going with because that kinda dictates what color you should be looking for. Love you. :)
This post was a hoot! I don't think you've found the right dress yet. The most important thing is to find one that you feel comfortable in, so you can enjoy the occasion.

If the skirt were longer, it would look a lot like what I wear tosing in Chorus with. Very Formal, but elegant. That would be my pic, in fact if Stef gets married any time soon, I may steal that dress from you. She wants to get married at the beach so I'm not sure if that would be appropriate dress for MOB or not so I'll have to do some research ;)
